J. Lorenzo Smith, 84, born October 13, 1918 in Snowflake, Arizona, passed away in Mesa, Ariz., on Jan. 11, 2003.
He is survived by his wife, Irma Merrill Fullagar Smith and daughters, Janice Wrathall of Scotts Valley, Ca., and Julie Smith of Salt Lake City, Ut., six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Robert J. Smith of Provo, Ut. Also surviving are Irma's daughter Becky Fullagar and and son Christopher Fullagar and daughter-in-law, Robyne Bunker Fullagar with their three children, Wren, Carson and Hallie Fullagar, all of Mesa, Az.
Jay graduated from Snowflake Academy and the Univ. of Ariz. in Tucson with a degree in Accounting and Finance.
He married Lyle Boyden in 1941, after serving an LDS Mission to the Central States Mission.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-'46 returning as a Lt. Jr. grade.
Jay worked for Mtn Bell Telephone most of his career, moving up the management ladder in Salt Lake City and Denver, then on to AT&T in New York City. He retired in 1982.
Jay served in the LDS Church as a very young bishop in Salt Lake City. He also served in the Bishoprics there and in Denver, Col. When his career took him to the East Coast, he served as Stake President in the New Jersey Stake (1968-'78), then as a Regional Representative in Pa. After Jay and Lyle retired to Mesa, they were called to be 1st Counselor in the Presidency of Arizona (Mesa) Temple in 1985.
The Smiths and Fullagars enjoyed a long friendship before Arthur Fullagar and Lyle Smith died. Jay married Irma Fullagar on October 2, 1990. They have had twelve happy years together.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 14, 7-9 p.m. at Bunker Family Funeral Home, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa, Az.
Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 15, 2003, 10 a.m. at the Holmes Park Ward building, 4640 E. Holmes Road in Mesa, Az.
Visitation for Family and Friends one hour prior at 9am.
Interment at The Mesa City Cemetery.
