KALOS, Sophie Irene


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona February 12, 2003 Sophie Irene Kalos, 88, was born on March 16, 1914 and passed away on February 9, 2003. Sophie was born in Chicago, Illinois one of five children, three sisters and two brothers. Her parents, Wajsech (Albert) and Maria (Mary) Trad immigrated to America in the early 1900's from Galicia, which formed part of the independent nation of Poland after World War I. Sophie grew up in a Polish neighborhood in Chicago with her brothers and sisters, they all pitched in to help support the family. She started working at age 15 and put herself through beauty school, at the same age, she met her husband, Peter of nearly 70 years at a skating rink one evening in Chicago, where they lived and worked together event-ually owning various businesses. In 1947 they moved to Phoenix with their first son, Thomas, then five years old and bought the Mayflower Motel on East Van Buren St., while Peter bought and sold various bars and restaurants in the Phoenix and Mesa areas, Sophie was very busy managing their motel and raising their three children, another son, Nicholas and a daughter, Dimitra. Sophie was extremely dedicated to our family and showed us a strength and love that will be passed down to future generations. She appreciated the simple things in life and loved to talk to everyone, everywhere she went. Her beautiful smile and spirit will always be remembered and will live on through her family. Sophie is survived by her sons; Thomas and Nicholas, daughter; Dimitra, daughter-in-law; Lee Ann, sister in law; Georgia Moukis, eleven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Sophie will be laid to rest today next to her husband, Peter, at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery following a 10:00 AM church service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1973 East Maryland Avenue, Phoenix, AZ. www.al mooregrimshaw.com.
