Courtesy of Pat Wilson. ------------------------------------------ The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Thursday, January 16, 2003 Charles Lee Brown, Sr., 66, passed away January 13, 2003 at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona, from acute myeloid leukemia. He fought a courageous 18 month battle until complications arose from a bone marrow transplant. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Charlene and their nine children: Cindy Ray (Bruce), Charles Jr. (JuDene), Chawna Naito (Shu), Curtis (Alison), Clint (Debbie), Camette McCleve (Wayne), Courtney DeWitt (Daniel), Carson (Jennifer), Celeste McGavock and 34 grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Karl, Joe, Phil, and two sisters, Margie Kleinman and Geraldine Hatch. Chuck was born on June 28, 1936 in Mesa, Arizona to Joseph Lee and Marjorie Lewis Brown. He graduated from Mesa High in 1954. He entered the U.S. Air Force specializing in radar and computer technology on B-47's. He married his eternal sweetheart, Charlene Breinholt, on July 19, 1957 in Mesa, Arizona Temple. For 30 years, Chuck worked as a journeyman electrician for APS. He had a life long interest in politics, history and religion, but his greatest love was for his family. Along with their own children, Chuck and Charlene welcomed others into their home. In 1979, Mako, a Japanese student, came to live with the Browns and has been a part of the family ever since. After a tragic plane accident in 1982, the Browns added 5 nieces and nephews to their family, Garin Breinholt (Lisa), Heidi Gallini (Kit), Allison Trotter (Brian), Todd Breinholt (Marianne), Jason Breinholt (Deborah). In June of 1985, the Brown Family was selected as Family of the Year and was honored at the White House by First Lady, Nancy Reagan. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Chuck served in various callings throughout his life. A viewing will be held Friday, January 17, 2003 from 7-9 p.m. at Bunker's Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa, Az. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Mesa Central Stake Center, 925 N. Harris in Mesa with a viewing one hour prior. Interment at Mesa City Cemetery.
