Daniel H. O'Grady, 90, formerly of Danbury, Conn., and Providence, R.I., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at his home in Phoenix. Mr. O'Grady was born July 5, 1912, in Warwick, R.I.
Phoenix. He was the husband of Ellen (Cummiskey) O'Grady.
A 1935 graduate of Rhode Island College, he received his MA from Columbia University. He devoted more than 50 years of his life to the service of others as a teacher and coach at Danbury High School in Danbury. Conn., and LaSalle Academy and Rhode Island College, both in Providence, R.I.
Dedicated to the enrichment of America's youth, he was a former director of the Green Knoll Camp in Brookfield, Conn., and a divisional director of the Boy Scout Camp Yawgoog in R.I. An Eagle Scout, Mr. O'Grady perpetuated scouting values and became an avid scoutmaster.
A former softball commissioner of the North Atlantic States, he was more recently honored with numerous awards in track and field, and basketball and was appointed to a number of athletic Halls of Fame. The track at Danbury High School was dedicated to Mr. O'Grady and is still the venue for the Dan O'Grady Relays.
Over his lifetime, his concern always was with the development and achievements of the individuals whose life he touched.
Besides his wife of 61 years, he leaves four children, Ellen Evans of West Dennis, Maine; Louise Hunt of Danbury, Conn.; Jane O'Grady of Bethlehem, Conn.; and Dan O'Grady of Phoenix; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at the convenience of the family.
