Martha W. Wilkins, age 83, long-time Tempe-area resident, passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2003 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Martha was born in Pike County, Ill. on Nov. 17, 1919.
She graduated in 1942 from Kahler School of Nursing as an RN, and then Woman's Missionary Training School in 1945, with the goal of becoming a missionary nurse. She then served as an Army nurse at the end of WWII from 1945 to 1946.
She and her late husband, Bob, were longtime residents of the Tempe, Kyrene and Chandler community. Martha retired from Chandler Regional Hospital and then Yavapai Community Hospital in Prescott in 1977.
Always an active church member, she is survived by: two sons, Scott Wilkins f Phoenix and Steven Wilkins of Abbeyville, La.; four grandchildren, Bill, Bob, and Steven Wilkins and Lisa Sullivan; and four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also, best-friend and sister-in-law, Vesta Knell of Mesa, Az. and niece and long-time caregiver, Judy Ward of Tempe, Az.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 21st from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Valley of the Sun Mortuary Chapel, 10940 E. Chandler Heights Rd., Chandler, Az.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, also at Valley of the Sun.
