HAWORTH, Eleanor Lucille (Lucy)

(Maiden Name: Henwood)

The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona February 16, 2003 Eleanor Lucille (Lucy) Haworth, born 7/24/1908, to Franklin and Emma Henwood, died 2/6/03 in Tucson at age 94. Lucy is survived by her daughter, Roberta H. Phalen and her grandson Robert Phalen. Lucy's life spanned an era from the early 20th C. to days of recent space exploration. Her early childhood memories included life on the family farm prior to electricity, the drudgery of farm chores such as egg gathering, milking, & hand-churning butter, times during the Great Depression when her family provided food & work to wanderers, the excitement of having running water & indoor plumbing installed at the farm, happy times of spring & harvest in the apple & peach orchards, & Sunday morning rides to church in her father's horse & buggy or in their sleigh in winter. She graduated from Manchester College in 1929 after her piano debut, & began her teaching career as a high school Music & Art teacher. In 1936 she married Robert E. Haworth, and in 1940 they moved to Phoenix Arizona where he became a restaurateur and then Vice President of Arizona Title, and Lucy returned to teaching. After receiving her MA in Education from ASU in 1956, Lucy taught at Madison Meadows until she retired in 1973. She will be remembered for her dedication to continual leaming, her pursuit of excellence in both professional and personal life, the comforts of her sugar cookies & the gentle warmth of her smile. A private ceremony will be held at Paradise Memorial in Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1028 E. McDowell Rd., Phoenix, Az., in the hope that the depredations of that disease may be diminished for others. Arrangements by Messinger Indian School Mortuary. Courtesy of Pat Wilson.
