Ruby Lee Hawkins Blake
She was born in Bethany, Texas April 28, 1912 and was the sixth child in the family of Andrew and Lela Bernett Simmons Hawkins. She attended elementary school at Boggy Baptist Church. Ruby graduated from the Central Colored High School in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1933.
She professed her hope in Christ at a young age; she united with the Boggy Baptist Church under the Pastorate of Rev. A.C. Capes. Ruby was united in holy matrimony to Ted Blake, Sept. 28, 1933, and to their union six children were born.
Sister Blake was a member of Bloomingrove Baptist Church in McNary and of St. John Baptist Church in Holbrook for a number of years. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years, a Missionary Society teacher, and for many years Ruby served as church corresponding secretary. She previously served as B.T.U. President, and President of the Women's Department of Northern Arizona Missionary Baptist District Association for 10 years. She was vice-president of Women Dept. of the Paradise Baptist State Convention for eight years. She has been St. John's Church Mother of the last 15 years.
Ruby will be missed by her family and friends. She was a loving wife and mother and a devoted Christian worker. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Ted Blake; one son, Wilbert Blake (Pamela) of Phoenix; four daughters, Marva Sumbry (Michael) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Linda Renfro (Porter) of Orange, Texas, Patricia Scott (Leroy), and Mary Holly (Lee) of Holbrook; one daughter-in-law, Teresa Blake of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Alfoster Hawkins (Nellie) of Glendale; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her son Wendell; two sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 25 at St. John Baptist Church in Holbrook. There will be a viewing from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at Owens Mortuary in Holbrook. Interment will be in the Holbrook Cemetery.
