KOWAL, Ted (Madman)


Ted "Madman" Kowal Jr., son of Ted Sr. and Mildred Kowal, born March 5, 1947 in East Chicago, Indiana, and died July 5, 2002 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ted was a member of the first graduating class of Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona and then went on to attend Mesa Community College and Arizona State University on music scholarships. He was also a member of the Arizona State Marching Band. Ted was a professional musician for all of his adult life. For the past 12 years he was the heart of Cold Shott and The Hurricane Horns, a premiere blues band here in the Valley. He was employed at Honeywell as a Manufacturing Engineering Associate for the past five years. Ted is survived by his wife of almost 22 years, Debbie; his children: Travis, Megan, Jolene (Mark) Morrell, Ted III, Michael (Leah) Kowal and nephews, Brandon Hopkins & Chris Henningsen. He is also survived by his sister Sandy (Ron) Henningsen. Along with father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Caroline Hopkins; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Andy and Maricris Hopkins; His brother-in-laws; William and Jeff Hopkins; sister-in-law Kellie Dickson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the extended family of Cold Shott and The Hurricane Horns; Rich Brydle, Dave Axton, "Small Paul' Hamilton, Scott Engle, Dave Russell, Jay Busch, Tim Finn and Steve Hastings. Ted was a devoted husband; father, brother, uncle, son-in-law and brother-in-law. He loved being part of his children's lives. He was an avid supporter of their musical accomplishments and was the #1 fan of their athletic endeavors. Ted was a friend to all in the Phoenix Blues family. He was always willing to help in a cause or benefit. In lieu of flowers there will be a scholarship fund set up. Visitation for Ted will be held, Monday, July 8, 2002 at Green Acres Mortuary, Scottsdale, AZ. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Green Acres Chapel of Light, 401 N.
