Roy F. (Babe) Henderson passed away on February 17, 2003 in Sun City West, AZ, his home for the past 17 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Thelma Henderson, three sons Roy A. Henderson, Marina del Rey, CA, James R. Henderson, Walla Walla, WA, and Terry B. Parsons, Carlsbad, CA, and his brother Everett Henderson, Sequim, WA. The extended family includes twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Roy was born in Lawrence, Kansas January 26, 1912 and moved to Spokane, WA in his early childhood. There he attended North Central High School and led its basketball team to the Washington State Championship in 1929. He began caddying at 12, which lead to his professional golf career and Life Member in the Professional Golfers Association. He began in Spokane as an assistant professional at Indian Canyon Golf Course and then became the Head Pro at the Manito Golf & Country Club in 1939.
Military service in the Army Air Corp interrupted his career for several years during World War II and following his service he returned to Manito and built a reputation of being a great "teaching pro." He became the Head Professional at the Veteran's Memorial Golf Course in Walla Walla, WA in 1957 and continued with his love of teaching people to play golf.
He retired there in 1975 and traveled extensively with his wife Thelma and played on the Senior PGA Tour until settling down in Arizona during 1978 to play golf and continue Master's level bridge game, his other great interest in life. His great love of teaching golf lead to teaching again at Sun Lakes Golf Course for several years beginning in 1984.
Services will be held at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel Saturday February 22, 2003 at 3:00 PM.
The Family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Westside Food Bank or the Salvation Army.
