SHAFFER, Chester William


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona February 24, 2003 Chester William Shaffer was born to Edith and Fay Shaffer on August 3, 1921 at Bellville, OH. He graduated from Arlington (Ohio) High School in 1940. He worked at the Curtis Wright plant, building airplanes when he was drafted into the Marine Corps and served until the end of World War II. Chester moved to Phoenix in 1953 and worked as a welder. He retired from Marathon Steel as a Supervisor in 1982 due to illness. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, step-father, Rev. Robert Oler, and two brothers, Louis and Melvin Shaffer. He is survived by his wife, Mickey; sons, Jerry and Gary, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and a sister, James (Carolyn) Oler of Gilbert; Wilbert (Norma) Oler of Columbus, OH; Carl (Paula) Oler of Riverside, CA and Annabelle (Del) Garforth of Avon Park, FL. He also has several nieces and nephews. Chester loved square dancing where he served as treasurer for his club. He loved his association with the Arizona Pickers and Grinners Association. He enjoyed going to the Eastern Star Retirement Home, visiting the residents and friends for many years. He volunteered with Mickey at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life program. He loved serving the 16th Street Church of God in the nursery and then the Missouri Park Church of God Nursery. He had a very enjoyable time being with his special circle of friends. Chester was attending the Cross Point Church of God until his health prohibitted it. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, February 25, 2003 at Resthaven Park Mortuary Chapel, 4310 E.
