Dorothy Pickelner, age 100, passed away on Feb. 27, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. Born in Lithuania on Feb. 25, 1903, she was the daughter of Lois (Lazar) & Rose (Risha) Wahl.
She was preceded in death by her late husband Sidney Pickelner who passed away in 1961.
Dorothy moved to Phoenix in 1947 from Cleveland, OH. She earned a B.A. from Western Reserve University. She taught high school in Ohio for 20 years. She also taught Humanities at Camelback High School in Phoenix, AZ for 10 years where she created the gifted program which took students to Europe in a summer education program.
Dorothy's activities included: Hadassah, Bikkur Cholim, Workmen's Circle, Phoenix Symphony, Jewish Community Center, B'nai B'rith, Pioneer Women, Na'Amat, Bible Study Group, Book Review Club, Kivel & Jewish Family & Children's Service. She was past President of the Chapter & Region & on the National Board of Hadassah. She was a Friend of the Phoenix Library and served on the Board of the Phoenix Jewish Community Center. She was Chairperson twice of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix Women's Campaign as well as Chairperson of the Women's Division of the Jewish Federation. She was a member of Temple Beth Israel and active with their Plotkin Judaica Museum. Dorothy received the Medal of Honor Award which is the highest award the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix bestows on an individual. She served of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society where the Dorothy Pickelner Enduring Legacy Award was created.
She loved reading, people and traveling. She participated in many fundraising events, moving audiences with her wit and speaking ability.
Funeral services Sunday, March 2nd, 2003 at 11 a.m .in Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th St in Phoenix, Az.
