Fred "Duane" Walker died February 27, 2003 in Spokane, Washington. He was born on February 21, 1932 in Gilbert, Arizona.
He graduated from Gilbert High School in 1950 and was active in their sports program, playing football, basketball and tennis. He was with the Army Corp of Engineers during the Korean conflict. He graduated from the University of Arizona with an engineering degree.
Duane worked throughout Arizona, California and Nevada; one of his positions was at the Mercury, Nevada Nuclear Test Site. He was the first Director of Public Works and Engineering for Navajo County in 1970.
He served on the State-County Engineering Board and the Navajo County Library Board. He also served three terms on the Pinetop-Lakeside City Council. He owned and operated the Walker's Rainbow Lake Lodge Resort in Lakeside, Arizona.
He recently moved to Kettle Falls, Washington where he lived with his wife Barbara.
Duane was a High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a true love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Duane is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara Oates Walker; his father, Fred A. Walker; daughter and son-in-law Traycie and David Borelli; son and daughter-in-law Loy and Katie Wilhelm; daughter and son-in-law Laurette and Marc Fjellman; brother Don Walker; sister and brother-in-law Charlene and Ronald Townsend; grandchildren Cody Borelli, Lindzie Borelli, Nicholas Borelli; Jordan Fjellman, Melanie Lindsey and Levi Fjellman.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm at the Mesa City Cemetery, 1212 N. Center St. on Wednesday, March 3, 2003.
Viewing at Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. Macdonald St., Mesa, from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, March 2nd.
