Mr. Jimmy S. Ong, retired grocer, age 99, passed away peacefully at Phoenix Baptist Hospital on Friday, February 28, 2003 due to complications from pneumonia. Mr. Ong was born on April 9, 1903 in China, immigrated to the United States in 1923, and moved to Arizona in 1933.
In 1938 he started and ran the Empire Market of Tolleson with his brother for 18 years before moving to Phoenix and opening the Fairway Market in 1959. Mr. Ong retired in 1965 and in his later years could be found enjoying spending time with his family, gardening, riding his exercise bicycle and watching WWF wrestling on television.
Mr. Ong was preceded in death by his mother Ong Chang Mae Yee, father Ong Ting Doan, brother Herbert C. Dong, first wife Anna Lee Ong, and grandson Jerry Mah.
Mr. Ong is survived by his wife Heung Seto Ong; daughter Linda Mah and husband, Loy Mah; son Harry D. Som and wife Bynn Yang; son Kenneth J. Ong and wife Anne K. Bui; grandchildren John Mah and wife Laurie Mah, Gary Mah and wife Donna Mah, Indigo Som and partner Donna Ozawa, Peter Som, and Jonathan Som; and great-grandchildren Brynja Mah, Audra Mah, Daniel Mah, and Brandon Mah.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary, from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 7, 2003 at 10:00am at the Serenity Chapel of
Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, 719 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, rizona.
