Clyde W. Laird, 89, a Tempe native, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at his home. Mr. Laird was born December 14, 1913, the son of Hugh E. Laird and Edna Hackett Laird. The third generation Tempean was a 1931 graduate of Tempe High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Arizona in 1951.
Mr. Laird worked as a pharmacist in Tempe for many years, first at Laird and Dines Drugstore and later at his own pharmacy. Prior to beginning work as a pharmacist, he worked for the Southern Pacific railroad, and served in the Navy's Pacific Fleet during WWII. Clyde served on the Phoenix Selective Service Board for many years. Mr. Laird was one of the twenty-six charter members of the Kiwanis Club of Tempe at its founding in 1952 and was a member of the clubs first board of directors. He had recently been awarded Honorary Member status.
He is survived by his daughter-in-law Marilyn Laird, Grandchildren Debbie Laird and Mike (Tammy) Laird Great-grandchildren Taryn and Tanner Laird and many friends. Clyde was preceded in death by his wife Juanita and son Hugh E. Laird II.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm Wed. June 4, 2003, at University Presbyterian Church 139 E Alameda Dr. Tempe. The family requests That memorials be made to Hugh E Laird II Ph.d Memorial Fellowship, College of Pharmacy, U of A P.O. Box 210207 Tucson Az. 85721 (make checks payable to the University of Arizona Foundation ) or to Hospice of the Valley 1510 E Flower St. Phoenix Az. 85014. Carr Tenney Mortuary handled arrangements.
