The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Saturday, March 8, 2003 Alice E. Colvin McCartney, entered into rest March 4, 2003 in Phoenix, AZ. Beloved wife of the late Col. Lester (Les) L. McCartney, AZNG Ret, beloved aunt of Ralph Pleasant, Surprise, AZ, Thomas L. Colvin, Gardiner, WA and Beth Colvin O'Connor, Sunnyvale, CA and many nieces and nephews. B orn into an Arizona Pioneer Family in 1908, and raised in the Chiricahua Mtns of Cochise County, she and her brother and sister moved into Douglas in 1925, where their parents made sure they could attend high school. After Douglas High School graduation she traveled to Tempe, AZ where she received her teaching certificate from what was then the Arizona State Teachers' College (now ASU). So began her long career as an art teacher in Arizona, she taught art in the Douglas schools for 16 years. After she and Les were married when he returned to Arizona after serving in WWII in Europe, the couple moved to Phoenix where she taught art in the Phoenix elementary schools for 25 years. She and her late husband Les McCartney were members of the Central United Methodist Church since 1945. She was a longtime member of the Phoenix Women's Club, and a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood for many years. After retiring from teaching, she gave many hours of craft instruction to the Women's Club, the Central United Methodist Church, and the P.E.O. Visitation will be Sunday, March 9, from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Hansen Chapel, 8314 N. 7th Street, Phoenix. Funeral Services will be held Monday, March 10 at 10:00am in the Pioneer Chapel at Central United Methodist Church, 1875 N. Central Avenue, Phoenix. Interment will follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6290 W. Northern Ave., Glendale, AZ. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Courtesy of Pat Wilson.
