MILLER, Allan Wesley


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Saturday, March 8, 2003 Allan Wesley Miller, 85, was born in Phoenix on April 23, 1917 to pioneers John and Maggie Miller. One of four brothers, he attended Glendale Elementary and High Schools. The brothers spent many hours working in the family's 4 cotton gins, some of the first in the State. In high school he became an accomplished trumpeter and was invited to play with military, college, local bands, and for public events including a concert for Eleanor Roosevelt and playing "Taps" for one of Arizona's early Governors. He and his Father and brothers helped build portions of the First Methodist Church in Glendale and were life-long members. Allan went to Arizona State Teachers College in Tempe and graduated in 1939. After attending the USC Masters program for a year, he returned to Phoenix and married Lois Virginia White in 1941 and spent the next 62 years together until her death in January 2003. At the start of WWII, he became a Link Simulator Instructor for RAF pilots at Falcon Field, Mesa in the Army Air Corps. In 1947 he, his dad, and brother Keith opened Millers Tire and Supply Co. in Glendale, which is still in operation. He retired for health reasons in the early 1980's and he and Virginia did some world-wide traveling. Allan passed away on March 4, 2003 and is survived by 2 children, Sharon Moeller of Glendale and James Miller of San Diego, James' wife Sandra, 4 granddaughters, 1 great-grandson, and brother Dr. Kenneth R. Miller of San Diego. Visitation will be at 6:00-8:00 PM. Sunday March 9, 2003. Funeral services will be at 3:00 PM. Monday March 10, 2003 at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary 7924 N. 59th Ave. Glendale. Interment to follow at Resthaven Park Cemetery 6209 W. Northern Ave.
