SLOTE, Edward B.

Edward B. Slote, 79, died June 24th, 2002, leaving behind his beloved wife, Treva, children Linda, Sean and Colin, grandchildren Case, Drew and Piper and pals Charlie, Leo, Smidge and Rocky. Ed served with pride in the Navy during World War II. On his way to join his ship he had come through Phoenix and fell in love with Phoenix and the western life style. Although born and reared in New York City, upon discharge he finished his education at Amherst College and Western Reserve University School of Medicine and came west to serve his internship at Good Samaritan in 1951. He enjoyed a long and productive professional life, first as a family physician in general practice in Phoenix. In the late 50's his love of animals led him to support the establishment of the Arizona Humane Society and the Arizona Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In the early 70's his love of children led him to decide to specialize in child psychiatry, practicing in California and the State of Washington. When he retired as Director of Medical Service at Western State Hospital in 1989, he returned to Phoenix to enjoy the companionship of his many friends and the frustration of year around golfing. Kind, compassionate, witty and urbane, his life was devoted to the service of others, be they two legged or four legged. His last moments were spent at home surrounded by his "pals". There will be no formal services, however, please make memorial contributions to Hospice of Arizona at 9155 N. 3rd Street Phoenix 85020. Published in the Arizona Republic June 26, 2002.
