DOHERTY, John Francis (Jack)

The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ Feb. 20, 2002, p. A22 John Francis (Jack) Doherty, 70, passed away Feb. 4, 2002 after a three-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his children - Patrick, Timothy, Colleen (Quayle) and their mother Kay Doherty, as well as daughter Kelly and her mother Linda Ray; and three grandchildren - James, Madelon and Sean. Born April 28, 1931 in Butte, Mont., to Patrick F. and Madelon M. Doherty, Jack lived in Seattle as a young boy, attending Cathedral Grade School, O'Dea High School and Seattle University. After achieving All-City and All-State status playing basketball for the O'Dea Fighting Irish, Jack gained even greater notoriety as a star player during his three seasons on the SU Chieftains basketball team - culminating in the Chieftains' finest season of 1951-52, when Jack recorded his highest points-per-game average and was key in the Chieftain's nationally spotlighted win over the Harlem Globetrotters at Edmundson Pavilion. That season's success also landed Jack and the Chieftains in the National Invitational Tournament against Holy Cross at Madison Square Garden. Jack worked in sales for several local firms until the early 1970s, when he invested in mining operations in Montana, where he lived for several years. He spent the remainder of his life managing, equipping or consulting on mining operations throughout the West, living for several years in Coeur d'Alene and eventually ending up in Wickenburg until last spring, when he went back to Seattle to live with son Patrick. A funeral mass was held Saturday (Feb. 16) at noon at St. Ignasius Chapel at Seattle University, with burial following at Holyrood Cemetery. A reception was held afterward.
