La Verne Heuer Nee Wehle passed away March 18, 2002.
La Verne was born on Aug. 22, 1921. Beloved mother of Dale Aliotta of Wickenburg; Karen (Jim) Sturtevant of Carpentersville, Ill.; Brian Manthey of Elk Mound, Wisc.; and Richard (BJ) of Schiller Park, Ill.; grandmother to Ann-Marie, James Jr., Albert Jr., Kimberly, Ryan, Randy, Angelo, Jennifer and Lance; great-grandmother to James and Kayla; and sister to Richard Wehle of Wickenburg.
Her husband Al Manthey, Hans Heuer, and her mother and father Elsie and Fred Wehle preceded her in death.
La Verne came to Wickenburg from Superior, Wisc., in 1987. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg. She was one of the church's "Crafts Ladies," working on the bazaars and teaching the ladies how to do crafts. She was on the site council for the senior citizens center. She was president and treasurer for many years.
La Verne was known as the flag lady after Sept. 11 because she made earrings and pins in the shape of the American Flag out of safety pins and beads. She worked the pancake breakfast each month at the senior center and made Southwest Chicken Chili for the health fair every year.
She had planned to sell copies of the chili recipe at the health fair to raise more money for the senior center. Whenever she cooked or baked, everyone's mouth watered. She was a fantastic cook. Many, many people "adopted" her and called her mom.
She enjoyed life and leaves a legacy of love and caring. She will be greatly missed.
Frey Funeral Home in Wickenburg handled the arrangements.
