On the morning of December 29, 2009, Wynne Carruth passed peacefully in her Winterhaven home of 59 years.
She leaves behind her surviving family and a multitude of friends whom she deeply loved. Her passion for people, knowledge, and the desert southwest were and inspiration to all who knew her.
Wynne was born in Mt. Vernon, NY on July 23, 1910. Smart and curious, she excelled at her studies earning a Bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts State College (UMass) in 1932 and a Master’s degree in science from Cornel University in 1933.
She married Dr. L.A. Carruth in 1937 and together they relocated from Geneva, NY to Tucson in 1949 where her husband was instrumental in founding the Department of Entomology at the University of Arizona. Wynne was a founding member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Tucson and a long-time docent at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, her brother David Caird, and her grandson Scott Ellington.
Survived by son Jim (Sally), Daughter Susan Ellington (Joe), grandsons Robert, John (Loren) Carruth, and Kelly Ellington (Amy) and great grandchildren Morgan, Sarah, Sydney and Emma Carruth, and Connor and Sean Ellington. Hers was an exemplary life filled with love, wonder, and achievement.
A memorial celebration will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday January 9, 2010 at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Wynne’s name may be made either to the Northminster Presbyterian Church or the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.
