Irene Gladys Mitchell, 87, of Tempe, AZ passed away March 27, 2003. She was born December 24, 1915 in Winterset, Iowa. She moved to Mesa, AZ with her parents when she was 4 years old.
Married Harry C. Mitchell April 12, 1936, and lived the last 57 years in Tempe. She was a member of the Scottsdale Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and an active member of the Retirees of Tempe, Tempe Sister City Corp. and Dayspring United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by daughter Sharon Mitchell Cook and husband Harry C. Mitchell.
She is survived by sons Harry E. (Marianne) Mitchell, Robert D. (Connie) Mitchell, daughter Kathleen (Ron) Collett. Granddaughters Amy Mitchell Hartley, Kacey Collett and Karen Cook. Grandsons Mark Mitchell, Wesley Mitchell, Wayne Mitchell, Ryan Collett and Kevin Cook, and 5 great grandchildren Irene was constantly involved in the civic life of her children.
She was a home room mother, a den mother and a bluebird leader. She collected for the Mothers March Against Polio and always volunteered or was volunteered for school, church and community bake sales. She daily demonstrated the ideals of dedication, commitment and willingness to serve others.
A visitation will be held Thursday, April 3, 2003; 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Carr Tenney Mortuary, 2621 S. Rural Rd, Tempe.
Services will be held Friday, April 4; 12:00 noon at Day Springs United Methodist Church, 1365 E. Elliot Rd., Tempe.
Contributions can be made to the Retirees of Tempe Association at the Pyle Center, 655 E. Southern Ave., Tempe, AZ 85282.
