Wallace "Ray" Rabold, 79, a winter visitor to Florence, died March 31, 2002, at home in Salem, Oregon. Services were Friday in Keizer, Ore.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital or Willamette Valley Hospice. Keizer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rabold was born in Portland, Ore., on Jan. 9, 1923, and moved to Eddyville, Ore., in 1925. At age 16 he entered the U.S. Navy where he became a survivor of the sinking of the USS Lexington during the battle of the Coral Seas.
He married his "Ruthie" in 1948. They had two sons, Timothy and Rex. After 20 years, he retired from the service at the rank of Master Chief Machinist Mate. He later became chief of mechanical and electrical services for the state of Oregon and retired in 1983 as director of the physical plant at Willamette University. He was a 32nd degree Mason, and avid golfer and a member of Al Kader and the Capitol Shrine Patrol of Salem.
His wife "Ruthie" and son Rex preceded him in death. He is survived by his son Timothy of Salem; a grandson, granddaughter and great-granddaughter.
