Courtesy of Pat Wilson. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Monday, April 7, 2003 Shirley Rinker Hastings, a devoted wife and loving mother, 77, passed away March 31, 2003. She was born April 5, 1925 in WaKeeney, Kansas. After her high school graduation, she became a U.S. Cadet Nurse, and completed her training at Kansas City General Hospital. Shirley and her first husband, Joe Ornelas, Jr., were married from 1948-1966, and had 2 children - Margaret (Peggy) and Richard. The family moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1958 where she worked in the Health Center at Haskell. She eventually directed their Dental Assistant program. She received her Bachelor's in Nursing from the University of Kansas in 1964, and a Master's in Adult Education from the University of Iowa in 1970. In 1972, she married her second husband, Glen E. Hastings. They enjoyed traveling to many foreign countries during their summer vacations. They have resided in Sun City West since 1984. She is survived by her husband, daughter, son, sister, nephew, step-daughters, step-grandchildren, and scores of friends, including many former classmates and students. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched. The family requests that donations be made to an educational institution or to the University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS 66044. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 12th at 10:00 A.M. in the Lakeside Chapel, Sunland Mortuary, Sun City, AZ. Courtesy of Pat Wilson.
