Charles Lemington West went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, after an extended illness. Charles was born in Long Island, N.Y., on Oct. 20, 1924. He graduated from high school in Tampa, Fla., then entered the Army, stationed here at the Kingman Army Air Field, followed with serving in Europe during World War II under General Patton.
When the war was over, he returned to civilian life and went to work for Chrysler in Indianapolis. He was there 35 years, where he also served as UAW representative as their secretary and treasurer for 30 years.
During his time in the service, Charles got involved in boxing and did very well. Upon his return home, he joined a gym and had quite a career in Golden Gloves. In 1953, he won the championship in the state of Indiana, which took him to the tournament in Cincinnati, leading up to where he began and trained the youth of Muncie, Ind., for a number of years, bringing his group to tournament championships.
Charles' wife of 49 years, Mavis West, passed away before him. At this time he leaves his wife, Shirley; his sons, Norman (Marilyn) of Kingsland, Ga., and Jerry of San Antonio; daughter, Dori Ladd of Kingman; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren too numerous to mention.
Our famous cigar smoking buddy, soul mate and friend is now at rest, never to be forgotten. He is most known as Kingman's big bingo winner and his famous PPV boxing parties. He is a member of Eagles FOE 3744, as well as a life member of VFW, American Legion and DAVA.
Charles is a member of Manzanita Baptist Church, 2040 Golden Gate Ave., Kingman, where services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 8. In lieu of flowers and gifts, please make donations to KRMC Hospice, which helped the family so much at his time of preparation for passing.
