John Joseph DeLong, 67, of Kingman went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009. John was a long-time resident of Kingman and held many positions in public service during his lifetime. John was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 3, 1942, at the White Cross Hospital. He moved to Kingman with his parents in 1952. John attended St. Mary's Catholic School and Mohave County Union High School in Kingman.
In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served until 1963 as a hangar deck-crew member on the USS Oriskany. Upon leaving the Navy, he returned to Kingman where he worked at Southern Union Gas Company. In 1964, he went to work as a Civil Engineer Technician for the Arizona Highway Department until 1974. In 1974, he became a police officer for the Kingman Police Department where he worked until 1985, when he was forced into medical retirement for injuries he received in the line of duty. While serving with the police department, he was a street officer, firearms instructor and range master and detective. John was also an advisor for the Kingman Police Cadet Program that was started by the police department during that time. John was a fourth generation law enforcement officer and was very proud of his service to the community.
John was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 16 and the National Rifle Association. John was an avid outdoorsman and loving family man. He never missed a chance to go hunting, fishing or spending time with his children and grandchildren.
John is survived by his brother, Ron DeLong of Kingman; daughter, Sherri L. DeLong of Kingman; his son, Wayne (Natalie) DeLong of Kingman; son, Nicholas (Emily) DeLong of Kingman; daughter, Dyan DeLong of Kingman; and daughter, Jacquelyn (Brad) DeLong of Kingman. John is also survived by eight beautiful grandchildren, Nick, Allison, Cassi, Emma, Max, Alek, Raya and Olivia. John was preceded in death by his parents, Rolland G. DeLong and Louise R. DeLong of Kingman.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, at the Journey Church, 2202 Stockton Hill Road, Kingman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a heartfelt donation to the charity of your choice.
