Arizona State Miner (Wickenburg) Saturday, June 5, 1926, p 1 c 6 Twelve strong men strained at ropes and tackle in Los Angeles as they lowered Tom Ton of Tempe, the heaviest man in the world, into his grave. Tom Ton, a side show performer, died recently in Los Angeles from heart disease. At his death he weighed 945 pounds. A special coffin and an unusually large grave was prepared to receive his body. His coffin weighed 650 pounds. Before his burial his body rested in state and was viewed by 40,000 persons. Tom Ton was born and reared in Tempe. He was a Mexican and lived in Tempe until he received an offer to travel with a circus. His last engagement was in a side show at Coney Island.
