James L. Murphy, May 23, 1942- December 14, 2000. James L. Murphy, the son of J.E. Murphy, founder of American Summit Insurance Co. and the J.E, Murphy Companies, died Thursday, December 14 in a tragic plane accident. The accident occurred while Jim was flying his acrobatic plane near Fort Lauderdale, FL when he experienced difficulties and crashed. He was killed instantly. Jim was the former owner of J.E. Murphy Company of Florida and co-owner of the J.E. Murphy Premium Finance Company, Inc., as well as Secretary and General Counsel of American Summit Insurance Company. He was Vice President of Operations for American Summit Insurance Company after its merger with Guide One Insurance of West Des Moines. Jim is survived by his daughters, Janelle, Minneapolis, MN and Bridget, Miami, FL; father, J.E. Murphy, Paradise Valley, AZ; brothers, Richard, Scottsdale, AZ and Stephen, Minnesota; sisters, Mary Plunkett, Minneapolis, MN and Susan Barton, Phoenix, AZ; and numerous relatives, friends, and colleagues whose lives he touched. Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to Make A Wish Foundation or the Benilde-St. Mary's Scholarship Fund, Edina, MN. The Arizona Republic December 22, 2000
