HAVLEN, Steve M.


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona 12/31/2009 Steve M. Havlen died Dec. 26, 2009, in Henrietta, N.Y. He was born July 2, 1929, Erin, N.Y. Steve was an avid hunter and fisherman all of his life who enjoyed the outdoors. His hobbies included bowling, helping family and friends by fixing their cars, rebuilding lawn mowers and general tinkering around in his workshop or garage. He has been a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers for 45 years and retired in 1981 from Chandler's Sand and Gravel of Palos Verdes, Calif. He and his wife of 62 years, Shirley, traveled all over the country for two years in their travel trailer before settling down in Lakeside. Life long friends, Sally and George Jones, also residents of the Lakeside area, were instrumental in Steve and Shirley's decision to settle there. Steve and Shirley spent many wonderful years in Lakeside and volunteered their time and talents at the community Love Kitchen. They helped collect, prepare food and assisted other voluteers in serving lunch to those who needed a warm meal and friendly smile. Steve and Shirley also volunteered their services at the Pinetop-Lakeside Senior Center helping to provide meals and clothing to seniors. Recently Steve and Shirley relocated to Henrietta, N.Y., to be near family. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Havlen; children Larry Havlen, Janet Walker and Paul Havlen; sister Norma Donahue; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father Steve Havlen; mother Doris and brothers Carl and Ronald. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Victory Baptist Church in Henrietta, N.Y. Jarmusz Cotton Funeral Home of Victor, N.Y., handled arrangements.
