KIMBERLY, John Alfred III

John Alfred Kimberly, III, 77, of Paradise Valley, Arizona, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2003 in the presence of his wife of 48 years, Martha, and his three sons, Knox of Scottsdale, Howard of Albuquerque and Olin of Los Angeles. John was born in Neenah, Wisconsin and enlisted in the United States Navy on the day before his eighteenth birthday, later that year becoming one of eighteen members of the Neenah High School Class of 1944 to receive their diplomas while in service. After completing his service in 1952, he pursued his degree in mechanical engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology and while in Chicago met Martha. They married in Indiana on August 22, 1954, and after John received his degree in 1956, they moved to Albuquerque when John accepted a position with Sandia National Laboratories, where Howard works today. In 1963, John and the family moved to Arizona, where he pursued his loves of outboard racing, fishing and hunting, and endless hours of puttering in his beloved workshop. The family dinner table was also his classroom, as he broadened the knowledge and sharpened the communications skills of his three sons. He leaves behind a deeply grateful immediate family, a sister Susan Kimberly Sutter of Neenah, a brother William Knox Kimberly of Homestead, Florida, six wonderful grandchildren, Thomas and Megan of Scottsdale, Eric and Sara of Albuquerque, and Ryan and Evan of Los Angeles, and seven nieces and nephews. The family expresses it appreciation to the doctors and staff of Mayo Clinic and all who gave John care and comfort during his struggle with cancer. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 12:00 noon in the chapel at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 East Indian School Rd. in Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorials to The American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016 or Desert Foothills VICaP (Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers Program), P.O. Box 5892, Carefree, AZ 85377. Published in The Arizona Republic from 6/8/2003 - 6/9/2003.
