Sylvia Ann Nikolaus Despain, 62, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully on November 4, 1998.
She was born on July 27, 1936, in Snowflake, Arizona, to Henry Israel and Clara McNeil Nikolaus. On January 23, 1958, she married her sweetheart, Loy K. Despain, in the Mesa, Arizona Temple.
Sylvia enjoyed many interests throughout her life, and was a very accomplished musician, needlecrafter, gardener, chef, teacher, and nurturer. At the time of her death, she was serving as the pre-service trainer for an inner-city humanitarian project for her church. She has recently traveled to Guatemala, Mexico, and Atlanta, Georgia with her husband on similar humanitarian projects.
She is survived by her husband Loy; also by seven children and their spouses and her 15 grandchildren. They are Royd and Lori Despain, children Heather, Christopher, Bryan, and Lindsay, of Littleton, Colorado; Melanie and Timothy Barrett, children Meredith and Timothy James, of Haledon, New Jersey; Nikolaus and Linda Despain, children Shanae, Kayla, Lacey, and Nathan, of Boise, Idaho; Camille and Paul Kavon, children Tanner and Sierra, of Petersburg, Alaska; Trevyn Despain and children, Connley and Ryan, of Sandy, Utah; Lance and Jen Despain, child Lauren, of Tucson, Arizona; and Ashley Despain, of Sandy, Utah. Also surviving are four sisters; Roxie, Colleen, Diane, and Bonita and three brothers; LaRue, LaMell and LaVor.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Monday November 9th, at the Cottonwood Creek Stake Center, 1535 East Creek Road, Sandy, Utah.
Friends may call on Sunday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive and at the Stake Center on Monday from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to services.
Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
