SOLPER, Lloyd Bernard (Sol)


The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ Wednesday, December 29, 1993 SOLPER, Lloyd Lloyd Bernard "Sol" Solper of Prescott died Dec. 24, 1993, at his home. He was 88. Mr. Solper was born Nov. 28, 1905, in Racine, Wisconsin. At the age of 15, he and his brother, Earl, came out west on an adventure. In Las Vegas, they purchased an interest in his turquoise mine in Death Valley. He worked as a ranch hand on the Hays Ranch and was a prospector and miner in Yavapai County. During the Depression, he owned the ore market in Wickenburg, purchasing and consolidating the ore from very small mines for shipment to the smelter. In Prescott, Mr. Solper wa a partner in the colorful "Green Frog" on Whiskey Row, purchased and operated the Prescott Ore Market and founded a cinder block plant on Miller Valley Road. He later became a mill foreman at the now non-existent Hillside Mill near Bagdad. Mr. Solper retired in 1967 after many years as owner and operatror of the Border Store in Fredonia, Arizona, and moved to the family ranch in Skull Valley. He is best remembered for his entrepreneurship, energy and determined self-reliance. Mr. Solper is survived by his wife, Dickscay Solper, of Prescott; brother, Earl and his wife Elizabeth Solper of Parker; sister, Jessie Smith of Plymouth, WI; three children and their spouses, Suzanne and Pete Howard of Page, Sandra and Richard Anderson of Camp Verde and Bruce and Ellyn Solper of Skull Valley; nine grandchildren, Tracy and Darren Ewing of Luke Air Force Base, Mike and Annie Wolfskill of Gilbert, Kristi and Rick Carpenter of Mesa, Father Anthony Anderson of Robstown, Texas, Joe Anderson of Robstown, Texas, Laura and Jerry Pfingston of Prescott, Christopher Solper of Flagstaff, Christopher RIdgeway of Flagstaff and Jeremy Ridgeway of Tucson; four great-grandchildren, Brandon Ewing; Amanda Wolfskill, Race Carpenter, Shelby Pfingston, and a fifth great-grandchild whose birth is imminent, Zachary Ewing. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Social Services. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Anthony Anderson, grandson of Mr. Solper earlier this week at Sacred Heart Church in Prescott. Final prayers and committal service will be held privately at the family ranch in Skull Valley.
