PORTER, Ben

Arizona State Miner (Wickenburg) Saturday, July 31, 1926, p 8 c 3 Forty-eight years ago today, I stood within five feet of the desperado Jim Curry when he shot up the John Drew Barrymore theatrical company in a lunch stand at the depot in Marshall, Texas. He killed actor, Ben Porter, dangerously wounded Maurice Barrymore, father of Ethel, Lionel and John Barrymore, and manhandled actress, Miss Mary Cummings. Curry was the only one that was armed. He was not a western gun fighter, but a butt and trigger wrangler. He was cleared by jury trial and afterwards killed by a gunman at Laredo, Mex. I am the only living witness to the unfortunate Barrymore affair. C. S. Stuart
