Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona - April 23, 1954 TRAGIC ACCIDENT CLAIMED LIFE OF MAYNARD GAY, JR. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon of this week for Maynard Franklin Gay, Jr.; 22-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Maynard F. Gay, Sr., of Wickenburg whose tragic death last Saturday afternoon on the old Cameron Ranch, up the river shocked the community. The services were held at the First Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Rev; William Barker officiated. Burial followed in the Wickenburg Cemetery with the American Legion, conducting military graveside rites. Born in Jerome, Ariz., June 23, 1931, Maynard was graduated with the class of 1950 from Wickenburg High School. After working for several business firms here, he entered the service and was discharged just three months ago from a Mortar Division of the U.S. Army with the rank of sergeant. Since returning from the service, he had been assisting hid father at the latter's welding shop on First Street, South. Young Gay had gone to the ranch Saturday to remove parts of a car which he had jacked up so he could get under it. Apparently the car slipped from its supports and fell on the youth, crushing his head and chest. The body was found by the father who went to the ranch when his son failed to show up for the evening meal. In addition to the parents, a sister, Evelyn, 17, also survives.
