GUTHRIE, Ralph Anson, Jr. (Rev.)


Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Tuesday February 2, 2010 Rev. Ralph Anson Guthrie Jr., 85, formerly of Flagstaff, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Guthrie was born Feb. 29, 1924, to Ralph Anson Guthrie Sr. and Dura Mauldin Guthrie. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II when he flew the "Hump" in China and Burma. He also served in the Korean War. He began to preach in 1952 and attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He pastored a number of churches in Texas and Arizona. He and his wife, Bettye, then went on to become home missionaries in Prescott and Flagstaff. The couple moved from Flagstaff in 2008 to Round Rock, Texas, to be close to family. He lived in Park Valley Inn Health Care Center for the 14 months prior to his death. Rev. Guthrie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bettye Jo; sons Ron Guthrie (Terry) and Allen Guthrie (Rita); two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Jennie Gibbs (Marion); one nephew; and two nieces. Burial will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas. A memorial service will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Park Valley Inn Health Center in Round Rock with Reverend Don Dye officiating. A reception will immediately follow.
