Mae Wheat, 89, left this earthly life Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, and joined her precious Savior, Jesus. Mae was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Kent. She was raised, married and had children in Evansville, Ind. She moved to Grants, N.M. and lived there for years before moving to Concho and St. Johns.
Most people around here know her as Grandma Mae. A name befitting her for she showed a Grandma's compassion and love to just about everyone she met. Like Dorcas in the Bible (Acts 9:36&39) she showed God's love by sewing for others. Many children have gotten new clothes sewn by Grandma Mae.
She sewed hundreds of pieces of clothing to send with Micaiah Ministries, a ministry for children in Russia who live on the streets. Many times she sent clothes with the Sisters of our Lady of Guadalupe of St Joseph to the Villa Insatil De Nuestra Senora De Guajalopey San Jose Goajalajara Julisco Mexico, an orphanage in Mexico. Mae called them her kids.
Mae was always willing to help someone sew something they needed. She loved to sew and she loved to teach others to sew. More than sewing she loved Jesus. She wanted to serve Him with her whole heart. She was very faithful to be in church and to encourage others to love Jesus. Always at church there would be children who had waited to sit by Grandma Mae.
Mae loved her brothers and sisters in Christ no matter what church they attended and she loved to share her testimony of God's goodness with others. She believed in the power of prayer and saw many incredible answers to her prayers. She enjoyed and did a lot of canning. She gave much of what she canned to those who needed food. She and her husband Bob Wheat, who preceded her in death, spent a lot of time on the lakes, especially Concho lake, fishing. She loved to fish especially for trout.
She is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Alexander; son Louis Bolin Jr. and many great and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many of us who know her as our adopted Grandma. "We rejoice because we know she is with Jesus, but we will greatly miss her kindness and the love she showed to all of us."
To celebrate her life and her homecoming a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec.10, at the Baptist Church in St. Johns.
Burnham Mortuary of Eagar/St. Johns handled arrangements.
