Dorothy P. Johnson, died June 11, 2003, in Phoenix, Arizona.
She is survived by daughter Persis McClennen Khan of Cambridge, MA, son (Hon.) Crane McClennen of Phoenix, daughter Emery McClennen Schweig of New Rochelle, NY, daughter-in-law Deborah McClennen, sons-in-law Arshad Khan and Barry Schweig, grandsons Alan M. Schweig and Mark M. Schweig, and sisters Mildred Rieck, Martha Dewey and Marion Longstreth.
Dorothy Louise Petrovich was born January 18, 1917, in Ambridge, Pennsylvania to Lewis Petrovich and Mara (Raynovic) Petrovich. She graduated from Aliquippa High School at age 16. She worked for the Beaver County Relief Office, and later the Department of Defense in Washington D.C.
In 1943 she was married to Louis McClennen in Winter Park, Florida. They moved to Phoenix in 1946. She received her A.A. with highest distinction ('51) from Phoenix College, and her B.A. with distinction ('59) and M.S. ('64) from Arizona State University. She was elected to Iota Sigma Alpha, Kappa Delta Pi, Sigma Iota Epsilon, Delta Pi Epsilon, and Phi Theta Kappa honor societies. She attended Arizona State University Law School and Harvard College.
Following a divorce, she married Abbott L. Johnson II, of Muncie, Indiana, in St. James, Barbados. They lived in homes in Muncie, Indiana, Frankfort, Michigan, and Phoenix. She was active in Phoenix Symphony Guild, Visiting Nurses Service, the Red Cross, and was a member of the Phoenix Art Museum, the Heard Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution. She was a member of the Phoenix Country Club, the Delaware (Indiana) Country Club, and the University Club (New York).
She traveled extensively, including cruises on the M.S. Kungsholm, the M.S. Rotterdam, the M.S. Sagafjord, and the M.S. Queen Elizabeth II, and study tours with the Smithsonian Institution. She studied art with Bill Schimmell, Jim Parker, Jossey Bilan, and Merrill Mahaffey, among others, and was an accomplished painter in water colors and oils. She enjoyed fashion and design, and created many of her own clothes, decorative items, and utilitarian inventions.
Services will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. on June 21, 2003. Burial will be in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Odyssey Healthcare Hospice, Attention Beth Emlay, 202 East Earl Drive, Suite 320, Phoenix, AZ 85012.
