James L. Smith Sr. of Phoenix beloved husband and father passed away at his home on Saturday May 3, 2003, after courageously battling illness. James was born in Ida Grove, Iowa on March 19, 1931 - and moved to Arizona in 1957. James retired in 1994 after 30 years at the Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette. James was preceded in death by his son, Michael, and is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years Ruth, a daughter Machrina, son James Jr. James was an avid gardener who had become famous for his asparagus, tomatoes, cauliflower and broccoli. James wanted his final epitaph to read "See ya later". T here will be a viewing and rosary from 5-8pm Thursday May 8, 2003 at AL Moore - Grimshaw Mortuary 710 W. Bethany Home Rd. Phoenix, AZ, 85013. A memorial mass for James will be Friday May 9th at 10am at St Louis the King Church at 43rd Ave. and Maryland and will be interned immediately following the mass at St Francis Catholic cemetery.
