Edwin F. Karn, 94, passed away Wednesday morning, June 11, 2003.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Donna; grandchildren Kim, Kathy, Lynne, Karen, Dave, Tom and Steve; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was born in Leland, IL on Feb 23, 1909 to Albert and Etta Poundstone Karn. Before retiring in Arizona in 1967, he worked in franchising for Mission Orange, Squirt, Double Cola, and Fairmont Foods. After arriving in the Tucson/Green Valley area he began his long personal mission of providing humanitarian services to others. Most of his waking hours were devoted to volunteerism.
His list of service credits are endless. National recognition of his efforts: 1987 the Jefferson Award from the Am Institute of Public Service and the National Community Service Award from AARP/Am Assn of Retired Persons; 1989 the St. George Medal National Division Award from the Am Cancer Society. In 1996 he received "Tributes to Aging" Award for Southern Arizona. He served as a president, founder or board member of several service organizations in Green Valley where he resided for 27 years.
He was a founding member of St. Mary's Hospice in Tucson and served as board member of the Pima Council on Aging, Carondelet Holy Family Center, RSVP, Carondelet Hospice Services, Am Lung Assn, Alzheimer's Assn, Am Cancer Society. He served as AARP's Asst State Director for Arizona. He was very active in Rotary and the Republican Party.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 20 at 11:00 A.M. at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd. Scottsdale, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Ed's name to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phoenix, AZ 85014.
