Kathleen Daubert Smith of Tucson and Prescott, 75, passed away at her home on Jan. 26, 2010, from cancer.
Kathy is survived by her sons, Peter Fischer of Northfield, Ill., and Fritz Fischer of Niwot, Colo., and is preceded in death by her son Andrew Fischer of Winnetka, Ill. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law Joanne, Lynn and Gabrielle. Her legacy will live on in her eight loving grandchildren, Kevin, Eric, Kylie, Shannon, Molly, Meredith, Drew and Teddy.
Kathy grew up in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, the daughter of George A. Daubert and Hilda McAfee Daubert. She studied art history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, before marrying Harry A. Fischer Jr. She lived for 25 years in Northbrook, Ill., raising her sons Peter, Fritz and Andrew Fischer. While in Northbrook, she served many years on the boards of the Junior League of Chicago, the Northfielders Garden Club and the Women's boards of Hadley School for the Blind and Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital. She also served as chairman of the board of Daubert Industries Inc. from 1980-1986.
Kathy moved to Portola Valley, Calif., and then to Aspen, Colo., in the 1980s. While in Aspen, she continued to serve in positions of philanthropic leadership, joining the boards of the Aspen Art Museum, the Aspen Institute and the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, where she served as president of the board for three years. She served on the national board of the Smithsonian Institution from 1993-1999.
She spent the last 15 years of her life in Arizona, both in Prescott and in Tucson, where she continued to pursue her interests in advancing the causes of the arts and education. She joined the board of the Nature Conservancy and WARF, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, as well as the Waisman Foundation for Biomedical Research at the University of Wisconsin.
Kathy, affectionately known as "Bou" to her friends and family, was a woman of tireless energy, uncommon drive and boundless friendliness. She brought these qualities to her relationships with friends and family alike, touching countless lives everywhere she lived. She loved to travel and had the opportunity to travel throughout the world with her many friends and family.
As per her wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, Kathy would like to be remembered through donations to her favorite charity, WARF, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, 614 Walnut Street, 13th floor, Madison, WI 53726.
