VAN SLYKE, Herbert (Herb) Silvernail


Black's Mortuary, Show Low, Arizona Herbert Silvernail Van Slyke (November 11, 1931 - February 6, 2010) Herbert "Herb" S. Van Slyke, 78, of Show Low, passed away Friday, February 5, 2010, at a Phoenix hospital, finally succumbing to a six year battle with myelodysplastic leukemia. He was born November 11, 1931, in Little Falls, NY, the son of Floyd and Ella (Silvernail) Van Slyke. He was raised and attended school in Little Falls until joining the U. S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. During the time he was stationed in Tucson, he met his wife, Joan Brousseau. They moved to Alpine, AZ in August, 1965 where he owned three businesses, The Tackle Shop, Alpine Garage and Mountain Hi Lodge. He was an active member of the Alpine community where he served on several boards and he donated the property to have a permanent volunteer fire department there. He enjoyed hunting, skiing, golfing, bowling, tying flies and carpentry. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan of Show Low; their four children, Raymond Van Slyke of Alpine, Denise (Gary) Engels of Alpine, Rex (Jenni) Van Slyke of Alpine and Dawn (Doug) Coplan of Show Low; sisters Ellen Barton and Lynda Fletcher; seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ardis Pfannebecker, Jane Bevers and Janet Olsen and brothers Rexford and Floyd Van Slyke Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 13 at Calvary Baptist Church, Show Low with Pastor Steve Hair officiating. Burial will follow at Show Low Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Summit Healthcare Auxiliary or Aplastic anemia or M D S International Foundation, Inc.
