ALMARAZ, Ernest (Ernie) Arthur

Norvel Owens Mortuary Flagstaff, Arizona Ernest "Ernie" Arthur Almaraz (September 30, 1947 - August 25, 2007) Ernest "Ernie" Almaraz passed away on Saturday, August 2l,2007. He was born and raised in Flagstaff, Arizona. Ernie graduated from the College of Business at Northern Arizona University ('69) with a degree in Accounting. Over the years, Ernie had worked in several departments within NAU beginning with his position as Finance Manager with the Athletics Department in the 1970s. Later, Ernie worked for the School of Communication and, most recently, was the Sponsored Projects Administrator within the Sponsored Projects Department. Ernie attributed his life long commitment of serving others to his time spent as a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. This foundation lead him to volunteer in many different areas within the community. Ernie used his accounting knowledge when he took on the responsibility of being the treasurer for the Coconino County Council on Aging and when it came to church fundraising events such as the Jamaica. He also offered his time and skills to other service organizations such as La Guadalupanas, The Coordinating Council on Mexican American Affairs, and as an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Ernie enjoyed an active lifestyle which included hiking, fishing, and camping. Another passion of Ernie's was running, which was evident by his many entrances into local charitable 5K events and his annual participation in the Climb for Cancer. Even while having fun and enjoying the outdoors, Ernie was able to incorporate his desire to serve others and to make a difference. Ernie is survived by his son, Daniel; daughter, Jennifer Fulton; father, Alberto;sister, Esther A. Simmons; two brothers, Steven, and Larry, as well as 4 nieces and 3 nephews. Holy Rosary will be said at Our Lady of Guadalupe on Thursday, August 30, at 7pm. The funeral mass will take place on Friday, August 31, at 1Oam at Our Lady of Guadalupe. In lieu of flowers, the family has opened a memorial fund that will benefit Ernie's favorite charities, which include the American Cancer Society, United Way, and Toys for Tots.
