The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Sunday, April 20, 2003 Michael James McDermott, 53, on Friday, April 18, 2003 God reached down from heaven and brought Michael back into his arms. Michael was born in Phoenix Arizona in 1950 and raised in Chandler, Arizona. He was the 4th child of 6 children to Elmer and Katherine McDermott. His brothers and sisters will truly miss him; Kathleen Escobedo, Susan Whippo, Mary Jane Tetzloff, Timothy McDermott and Terry McDermott. Michael put himself through college at ASU. He was in the Arizona National Guard for 6 years. Michael loved to drive and was able to incorporate his passion for driving into his work. Mike worked for Roadway Express for the past 20 years and was a teamster. Mike's Roadway family will never forget his wit and charm that kept them laughing and loving their teamster brother. Michael's proudest accomplishments are his 2 boys, Dillon 10 years old and Keegan McDermott 8 years old. Michael put on a courageous fight against brain cancer for the love of his boys and his wife Julie. He put his family first before anything else. Michael was a devoted, loving husband and best friend to his wife and soul mate Julie Rollins. They have played together, lived a wonderful life together and loved each other for the past 27 years. Michael is survived by his wife, 2 children, his mother, his 5 brothers and sisters, 6 brother and sister in laws, his uncle and 16 nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service held Thursday, April 24th, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 3801 E. Greenway Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85032 with a reception to follow at the hall. A graveside service will be held immediately following the memorial at Holy Redeemer Cemetery, 23015 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, Arizona. Contributions for a college fund in Michael's name are being set up for the fight against brain cancer at Barrows Neurological Foundation at 350 W. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85013.
