The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona - 02/20/2003 Melissa Bryner Whiting, 33, died in Essex Vermont Monday, Feb. 10, 2003 in a car accident. Melissa was the wife of Shawn Whiting, a 1989 graduate of Round Valley High School, and daughter-in-law of Buzz and Sandy Whiting of Springerville. Melissa served an LDS mission for the Deaf and afterward she married her sweetheart Shawn. This week marks their ninth wedding anniversary. Her "angel boy" Bryant was born in 1995, the indomitable Thatcher in 1997, and "punkin" Tessa Kay last year. To Melissa, her precious children are everything. Melissa was born the year men first touched the moon, and as a result she was always looking up. She is one of the liveliest and most dynamic people her friends know and cannot be in a room for five minutes without making someone laugh. She is fearless, generous, loving, wise, and witty. She has been fighting kidney failure for the past six years and was preparing for a second transplant. Her surviving family awaits the day when they will be together again. Her parents: Wallace and Bonnie Bryner of Salt Lake City; husband's parents: John (Buzz) and Sandy Whiting; husband's siblings: Amber Whiting, Trevor Whiting, Garrett Whiting, Devon Whiting, Elder Trey Whiting; plus nieces and nephew. We will miss her terribly. She will not miss the mosquitoes. Vermont funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 14, at 11 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel located at 73 Essex Way in Essex Vermont. Services will also be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Melissa was born and raised with a viewing at 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at Larkin Mortuary; and a viewing at 10:45-11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Feb.18, at the Federal Heights Ward building at 1300 East Fairfax Road (about 3rd North); the service will be at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the Federal Heights Ward and the internment following. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to her children's college fund care of Bishop Wendell Gile, PO Box 338, Jericho, VT 05465.
