Robert "Bert" Tallsalt.
March 10, 1918 - April 18, 2003.
Bert, a resident of Kayenta, Arizona, passed away peacefully on Friday surrounded by his family at the Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix.
He will be remembered as a loving husband to his wife, Kate, who passed away in 2001, and a loving father to his children.
He is survived by three daughters, Priscilla, Roberta and Shirley, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They all remember him for his strength, integrity, wisdom and courage. Born in Copper Canyon on the Navajo Reservation, he was a member of the Bitterwater Clan of the Navajo Tribe.
Bert's contributions to his Country and the Navajo Nation will not be forgotten. During World War II, he volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a Navajo Code Talker. For his service and contribution, Bert was decorated with the Congressional Silver Medal in 2001. Following the war, he received his degree from Utah State University, and began a career as an educator at Intermountain School in Brigham City, Utah.
In the early 1950s, he served as a Councilman for the Navajo Mountain Chapter of the Navajo Tribe. Until his death, he was actively involved in the Navajo Code Talkers Association.
Graveside Services will be held Friday, April 25th, 12:30pm at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix. Contributions to the Navajo Nation Code Talkers Association Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1182, Window Rock, AZ 87515.
