SORROWING HERE AS BERT GHOLSON, RESPECTED CITIZEN, SUMMONED AT AGE 68
There was sadness and sorrow in the hearts of many Wickenburg residents as they learned last Saturday afternoon, May 15, of the death of Bert O. Gholson in Community Hospital where he had been removed following a stroke suffered early Thursday morning at his home on Adams street. He had been seriously, although not critically ill, for two weeks prior to suffering the paralytic stroke which ended his life.
Funeral services took place Monday morning at the M. L. Gibbons Mortuary in Mesa, conducted by Rev. Charles A. Surber of the First Presbyterian church of Wickenburg and burial followed in the Mesa Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tilman Nowlin, Oliver Heuloth and Loy Clingman of Wickenburg; Leo Austin of Tucson, Fred Baxter of Parker and Frank Sanders of Chandler.
BORN IN KANSAS
A native of Beloit, Kan., where he was born December 23, 1879, Mr Gholson became an electrical engineer and served as plant operator for several important concerns in the Middlewest and West over a long period of years, before coming to Arizona where he engaged in ranching in the Chandler district. Seven years ago he and Mrs Gholson, who were married October 5, 1909, in Beloit, Kan., came to Wickenburg, purchaseing and developing the motor court on Tegner street at Sols Wash which they conducted under their name until selling it a few years ago. Mr Gholson was a memeber of the Phx Lodge of the Modern Woodmen of America.
THE SURVIVORS
Mr Gholson is survived by the widow, the former Ellen McKellips; a daughter, Mrs Elizabeth Jerles, instructor in the Wickenburg schools and a brother, Sherm Gholson of Beloit. A son, Lt. Hubert L. Gholson, died in May, 1944, while on active duty with the U. S. Army in the European theater. Mrs Gholson's sister, Mrs Mary Nistle of Tulsa, Okla., came here to visit the family last November and expects to make this her permanent home.
Mr Gholson was a friendly, cheerful man. He was a respected citizen. He will be missed here.
