John L. Cope died Feb. 22, 2010, at his home in Dewey, Ariz. He was 84 years old. John was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Phoenix, Ariz., the son of John and Lila (Williams) Cope.
John held various managerial positions for a telephone company, and at one point managed 500 phone operators, of which all were women. John served his country in the U.S. Navy as a radio 0perator on the USS Rockaway. When WWII came to an end, John was the operator who took the call that the war was over and that the enemy had surrendered.
He is survived by his loving wife Carlene of 29 years, and his son Donald (Catherine) Cope of Louisville, Ky. John was preceded in death by his brother Livy Cope.
John was a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church in Dewey. He enjoyed the art of silversmithing, construction and remodeling. John was most proud of his son and wife.
A celebration of John's life will be 1 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2010, at the Mountain View Baptist Church, 395 Pony Place, Dewey.
Arizona Wakelin Bradshaw Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
