MCCONNELL, Ellen Shanahan


Ellen Shanahan McConnell, 88, a retired elementary school teacher, died June 23, 2003 at Arizona Eastern Star Center. Mrs. McConnell had a stroke on her 84th birthday in her home in Long Beach, California where she had lived since 1942. After her stroke she returned to Arizona for rehabilitation and to be closer to family. She was born in Douglas, Arizona, and grew up in Douglas, Clarkdale, Clemenceau and was a graduate of Arizona State University, then Arizona State Teacher's College. She and the late Robert McConnell were married at the old St. Mary's Catholic Church on the ASU campus. After graduating from college Mrs. McConnell taught at a number of schools in Arizona including Gilbert Elementary School and Baltz Street School in Phoenix before moving to California where she taught in the Los Angeles City Schools for 40 years. Mrs. McConnell was active in the ASU Alumni Association serving at various times as the President of the Southern California Chapter and as a member of the Association's National Board of Directors. She was active in California Republican Women and volunteered in a number of California election campaigns. She was active in and past president of the Young Ladies Institute and other civic organizations in Long Beach. Before her stroke she was an active member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Long Beach. Her Interests included bridge, calligraphy, watching sports, watercolors, travel, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and her grandchildren. Survivors include her son Robert. Jr. and daughter-in-law, Nadia of McLean, Virginia, two sisters Jane Spratt of Palo Alto, California, and Margaret Howell of Santa Maria, California and her two grand-children Andrij 18, and Deanna 16. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Bartholomew's Church in Long Beach, Arizona State University scholarship fund, or the US-Ukraine Foundation in Washington, D.C Funeral Mass, Thursday, June 26, 2003, 11:00 a.m., St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 2312 East Campbell Avenue, Phoenix, AZ.
