Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona December 31, 1970 A Washington woman was killed and four other persons, including her husband and two children, were critically injured early yesterday in a two-car head-on crash north of Wickenburg, the Department of Public Safety reported. Officers said Mrs. Joan Lucille Hanson, 33, of Mountlake Terrace, Wash. was dead of multiple injuries when patrolman arrived at the scene of the accident on U.S. 93, 20 miles north of Wickenburg. Mrs. Hanson and two of her children were passengers in a car driven by her husband, John, 37. Officers said their car was struck head-on by a second vehicle driven by Lt. Thomas Worth Lykins, 23, of Bristol, Va. Stationed at Luke AFB. Hanson and Lykins were evacuated from the accident scene aboard a Luke AFB helicopter participating in the MAST emergency air rescue program. Both men were reported in critical condition in Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, where they were taken by the MAST helicopter. The Hanson’s two children Kevin, 9, and Lynn, 15, were first taken by ambulance to the Wickenburg Hospital and later were transferred to Good Samaritan. Investigators said Lykins’ vehicles was southbound and apparently crossed the center line and struck the Hanson’s northbound car head on.
