SIMMONS, Malcolm C. (Cy)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona - 12/12/2003 Malcolm C. "Cy" Simmons, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 3 in Mesa. He was born July 28, 1919 in Pleasanton, Texas. Cy was a career U.S. Air Force Veteran, being the first draftee from Springerville. He flew 83 missions in WWII during the European Theater and retired as Colonel in 1970. Cy was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with two Oak Leaf Clusters (O.L.C.), Air Medal with three silver and one bronze O.L.C., Air Force Commendation Medal with O.L.C., Army Commendation Medal with one O.L.C., the Presidential Unit Citation with O.L.C. and several other ribbons and commendations. Cy was a sports fan; enjoyed golfing, water skiing, bowling and he built many things by hand. His ultimate enjoyment was being a family man playing with his grand kids. Cy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Kathleen "Kay" Simmons; daughter, Jeri King; son, Michael (Janet) Simmons; sister Louise Coleman all of Mesa; and four grandchildren, Eric King, Conor, Justin and Malia Simmons.
