Antonio "Tony" Gonzales Martinez, 92, of Holbrook died Aug. 10, 2003.
Tony was a proud US Navy veteran of World War II. He was a kind and generous man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Tony was born Nov. 5, 1910 to Agabino and Manucia Martinez of Concho. He moved to Holbrook and met his wife of 55 years, Maria Lena Padilla who he devotedly loved and cared for until her passing in 1995. During nearly a century spent as a resident of Holbrook.
Tony was a very involved community member, President John F. Kennedy recognized Tony for his service as the Democratic Vice Chairman of Navajo County. He worked as a typesetter at the original Holbrook Newspaper and also as an inspector for the Arizona Corporation Commission until his retirement. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
As an avid golfer, Tony enjoyed nothing more than spending the morning golfing at Hidden Cove in Holbrook, and did so until the day of his passing. As a devoted Catholic, Tony was a faithful member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Holbrook, where services will be held Saturday, Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. A rosary will be held Friday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
He is survived by his children, Charlene and Elwin Tilson of Savannah, Georgia, Joey and Mary Martinez of Holbrook, Gene and LaMerle Martinez of Mesa; and 10 grandchildren.
